Road Building
Forest road building is the construction and maintenance of permanent and temporary access structures. Each road is built to unique standards and guidelines based on the purpose and intent of what requires access into. Water management and slope stability are some of the most important factors that plays a role in the engineered design and layout of a road required to be safe for use. Systems of road construction include clearing a right-of-way, cut and fill, establishing a grade, sloping, ditching, bridge installation and repair, culvert installation and sometimes stream diversion.
Permanent forest service roads are periodically maintained or upgraded to meet specific site and safety standards. Temporary accesses, such as block roads or skid trails, are eventually deactivated and restored to a rehabilitated state where the site can reestablish natural vegetation after harvesting and silviculture obligations are met.
